There are jobs out there

Electronic can provide a wide range of jobs that pay very well. Often times students are going to be searching for jobs and not realize all the potential jobs they can get. In my personal experience, the best way to get a job is to think out of the box, and take advantage of each opportunity given to you.

For about a year now, I have been writing for a local newspaper, www.frenshiptoday.com. Through the newspaper, I have been offered a broadcast teaching job at a local high school, I have began to learn to design print pages, and recently my newspaper has asked me to head a few video camera training courses. Its funny to think about how taking a small writing job is opening so many more doors.

Now, now everyone is going to have this same situation. I think it is important when looking for a media job to not just rely on finding an editing job at an editing company. Or don’t find a web design job at a web design company. All these options are well and good. But keep in mind; everyone else is looking for these jobs. Instead, go to a hospital and see if they have room for a media man. I bet they do. It is really crazy, but these days, everyone needs a media man in their corporation.

Instead of listing out a few websites that provide jobs for electronic media, I will give examples of how you can be assertive and make a job for yourself.

Think about all of the options. What is the one thing every company wants to do?

They want to promote themselves, and what better way to do that than with video. Video is the best way to get your word out.

So here is a scenario. You know of an up coming company who is going to be opening. The company is looking for advertising, but doesn’t want to pay a free-lance video editor to make promotional videos. Go to the company and tell them the need for you. Tell them you will be in charge of all media within the company. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt to be an all around media person. Tell them you can write, produce, and do some technical work as well.

Lets say your dream is to work for a certain company. Good. Go get that job.

I personally have always wanted to make indie films. I think it would be really cool to work for the sundance film institute, http://www.sundance.org/. It never hurts to apply. A company that puts films together is a good place to launch a film career because you will be surrounded by the industry everyday.

Another electronic media field to explore is radio. Radio is a place that us Texas Tech students can flourish at because we have the tools to bring a new level to the industry. We can do audio and video. I know I know, your thinking video is no good on radio. But, think outside of the box. Radio stations have websites. And websites have video. This is a whole different dimension that radio stations are beginning to use. I suggest doing something local with this. Local stations won’t find a need for it right away. But use your speaking skills learned at Texas Tech to make the radio station execs feel they can’t function without video on their website. My favorite radio station is www.kfmx.com. I’ve looked around this website, they could use some video (Then again, I think everyone can use a little bit of video in their life).
